Not a Moment to Lose
In the event of a fire, there’s not a moment to lose when you must locate extinguishers. If the use of fire extinguishers is part of your fire safety plan, best practices in safety communication mean that you clearly and accurately mark their location so they can easily be found.
Finding Fire Equipment Fast
Because of our involvement in writing both the NFPA and ISO standards related to fire safety signs, we understand how fire equipment location sign systems are meant to be designed and installed. Picture the risk situation you’re trying to address; the need to find a fire extinguisher can occur at any time and practically anywhere in your facility. Your goal, then, must be for people to be able to easily locate fire extinguishers in every area. But this is rarely the case. Obstacles, partitions, corridors, and corners exist. So the best safety practice is to:
- Post an extinguisher location sign above the actual equipment.
- Then install directional versions of the fire extinguisher sign (which point toward the direction to the equipment) wherever people cannot actually see an extinguisher’s location or its “above-the-equipment” sign.

OSHA on Fire Extinguisher Signs
The OSHA regulation for fire extinguisher signs reads as follows:
1910.157 Fire Protection - Portable fire extinguishers.
1910.157(c)(1) The employer shall provide portable fire extinguishers and shall mount, locate and identify them so that they are readily accessible to employees without subjecting the employees to possible injury.
While the OSHA standards on fire extinguisher signage requirements are not ultra-specific, a good best practice source is to always look into the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)’s standards for more clarity.
