ISO 7010’s Amendment 10 in Focus: A Breakdown of Newly Standardized Symbols

30th Jun 2026 Clarion Safety Systems

In mid-2025, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published Amendment 10 to ISO 7010, introducing a new set of standardized safety symbols to the library. Keep reading for details on the role of ISO 7010, the benefits of symbol standardization, the new symbols to be aware of – and how Clarion Safety's products and customization capabilities can help you implement these.

About ISO 7010

Product manufacturers and safety personnel across many different industries rely on international standards as a foundation to effectively warn about product and workplace hazards. Technical standards set by ISO help systematize safety messaging, support compliance with varying regional regulations, and enable the export of products across international borders.

ISO 7010 is the standard that guides the graphical symbols that are used in the design of your safety labels, signs, and tags. It is maintained by ISO Technical Committee 145 (ISO/TC 145), specifically Subcommittee 2, charged with standardizing symbols related to safety identification, signs, shapes, symbols, and colors. ISO standards are reviewed every five years to ensure they remain as effective as possible, and new symbols are added through amendments on a rolling basis. ISO 7010 prescribes symbols for visual safety messaging around accident prevention, fire protection, health hazard information, and emergency evacuation.

Benefits of Symbol Standardization for your Safety Labels and Signs

When ISO registers a symbol, it has been vetted through a rigorous, multi-stage process involving safety experts from around the world, including ours at Clarion Safety Systems. This matters for your organization in several concrete ways.

  • Global clarity: Standardized symbols serve as a visual language that transcends written language. A registered ISO 7010 symbol communicates the same message to a worker in a facility in Germany as it does in the United States or Japan – without a word of text required.

  • Compliance confidence: ISO standardized symbols can strengthen compliance confidence, particularly for manufacturers exporting goods internationally. Using registered symbols demonstrates a commitment to globally recognized safety best practices and simplifies compliance documentation across regulatory jurisdictions.

  • Staying current: Symbols are updated on a careful and meticulous basis, with only a small library added at a time. This pace gives organizations the ability to adapt, applying changes that have been determined necessary to safety and well-being.

  • Reduced risk of misinterpretation: One of the measures of the effectiveness of a safety label or sign is its ability to communicate a critical message quickly. Standardized symbols are often developed using human factors research and, at times, with comprehension testing, meaning designs have been evaluated for how quickly and accurately viewers understand its intent. This is particularly important in high-risk industrial environments, where delayed comprehension can lead to injury.

Clarion Safety Solutions and Customization Capabilites

Our team at Clarion Safety reviews symbol updates as they happen and assesses our product line of safety labels and signs – and our customization capabilities – in line with those changes. What does that mean for you? Each of these symbols from Amendment 10 has been added to our symbol library, meaning they can be incorporated into your custom products. We're also reviewing our standard product library for opportunities to better align our offerings with the latest registered designs.

One update our experts have already made is to transition our products featuring the "No Access" symbol (shown above, ISO symbol code P080) to reflect the latest registered design. This change – moving the red prohibition slash to overlap the human figure directly – is a direct result of ISO's ongoing human factors research and comprehension testing, and results in a symbol that communicates its message more quickly and clearly.

This kind of proactive attention to standards updates is a core part of what Clarion Safety brings to every partnership. Our team doesn't simply follow these standards – we participate in the discussions that create them. Our involvement includes chairing the ANSI Z535.1 Safety Colors committee, membership in the full ANSI Z535 Committee, and active participation in the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO/TC 145. This deep engagement means that the labels and signs you purchase from Clarion Safety are backed by the most current data and best practices available.

Implementing the most up-to-date, standardized symbols is a proactive step toward safer products and safer workplaces. It demonstrates a commitment to using science-based design to protect employees, visitors, and contractors from potential hazards. If you have questions about incorporating any of these new Amendment 10 symbols into your safety program, or if you'd like to discuss your current labels' compliance standing, contact our team today.
