Accurately labeled pipes and valves help foster a safe working environment. It’s crucial to be aware of the internal and external contents of a pipe to allow for safe handling. In any given industry, pipes can be extremely hot or cold to the touch and can contain pressurized steam, chemicals, or other materials that can be disastrous to health. Properly labeled pipe markers act as a guideline and help avoid injury and facility accidents. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) require that pipes be suitably marked across a wide variety of industries. Failing to label a pipe could lead to mounting financial problems due to regulation fines, lawsuits, and productivity loss.
Pipe Marker Colors and Placement Guidelines
For convenience, the red label identifies fire-quenching liquids, orange identifies toxic and corrosive fluids, yellow identifies flammable fluids, and brown identify combustible fluids. The green label is used to identify water (potable, cooling, boiler feed, and other water) while the blue label identifies compressed air. The purple, black and white labels are user-defined, allowing for flexibility in design. The placement of these labels is described as being required at all changes in direction, on both sides of entry points through floor and walls, next to all valves and flanges, and at 25 to 50 foot intervals on straight runs. Burns resulting from exposure to high-temperature liquids or gases, toxic exposures stemming from inadvertent contact with hazardous materials, and leaks due to improper handling are just a few examples of the consequences that can transpire in the absence of clear pipe labeling.
