Posted by Clarion Safety Systems | 14th Sep 2023
Join us at the University of Wisconsin’s 35th Annual Product Liability Conference, which takes place in early October and includes a session from one of our Clarion Safety experts, along with a presentation from one of our PE & certified Functional Safety Engineers at Machine Safety Specialists. Participants at this year’s event have the option to attend the physical conference at UW’s campus or to attend online. No matter which attendance option you prefer, don’t miss this chance to expand your product safety knowledge!
A Focus on Product Liability Prevention Best Practices – and Emerging
Trends
This UW conference is designed for product safety and risk management
professionals and insurance providers, including those that work for or with
industrial and commercial equipment manufacturers. That includes product safety
managers, risk managers, product development managers, design engineers,
technical writers, and attorneys. The conference runs from October 10th to 12th. Unlike the
abbreviated versions the past few years, this conference will spend more time
and have more presenters, encompassing a wide variety of product liability
topics. The conference will have sixteen live presentations, delivered from 8:00
AM to 5:00 PM CDT on the 10th and 11th, and 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM CDT on the 12th. Attendees earn professional development hours
(PDH) and continuing education units (CEU’s).
Clarion Safety Systems: A Featured Expert on Visual Safety
Communications
Clarion Safety’s director of standards compliance, Angela Lambert, will be one of this year’s presenters, with a session on
on-product warnings best practices. “Failure to warn” and “inadequate warnings”
continue to top today’s product liability allegations. Angela will present key
elements of labels and instructions as defined by the 2022 ANSI Z535.4 and ISO 3864-2 standards, and noteworthy trends in creating effective
warnings for U.S. and international use. The discussion will include the most
recent standards updates that coincide with 2022 and coming 2023 republications,
as well as risk management and label format options. Angela’s background
includes over fifteen years of experience in the field of warnings and
liability, including involvement at the leadership level in the ANSI and ISO
standards. She’s chair of ANSI Z535.1, the standard that focuses on colors used
in visual safety communication, as well as a delegate representative to ANSI
for the ISO/TC 145 SC2 WG 1 committee, responsible for the library of ISO 7010
registered symbols and the ISO 3864 set of standards.
Machine Safety Specialists: Professional Functional Safety Systems
Experts
Clarion Safety’s VP of Safety Assessment, Ken Hackworth, PE, FS Eng. (TÜV Rheinland #12058/16), will be also one of
this year’s presenters. His presentation is titled: 3 Steps to Prevent
Machine-Related Injuries – Application of the Latest Safety Standards and Risk
Assessment Methods. Ken will discuss the three critical steps to improve fixed
industrial safety: Motivation, Discovery, and Control. Additionally, a part of
engineering controls, mechanical guarding, control reliability, and functional
safety will also be explored along with considering administrative risk
reduction measures. Ken holds a Bachelor of Science degree in
Electrical Engineering from the Ohio State University and is a licensed
Professional Engineer (PE). Additionally, Ken is a TÜV Certified Functional
Safety Engineer, a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals
(ASSP) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). He is also a member
of the ANSI B11 subcommittee.
